Vegetation is a major environmental factor influencing habitat selection in bird species. High resolution mapping of vegetation cover is essential to model the distribution of populations and improve the management of breeding habitats. However, the task is challenging for grassland birds because microhabitat variations relevant at the territory scale cannot be measured continuously over large areas to delineate areas of higher suitability. Remote sensing may help to circumvent this problem. We addressed this issue by using SPOT 5 imagery and phytosociological data. We mapped grassland vegetation in a floodplain using two methods. We (i) mapped the continuous Ellenberg index of moisture and (ii) identified 5 vegetation classes distributed across the wetness gradient. These two methods produced consistent output maps, but they also provided complementary results. Ellenberg index is a valuable proxy for soil moisture while the class approach provided more information about vegetation structure, and possibly trophic resources. In spite of the apparent uniformity of meadows, our data show that birds do not settle randomly along the moisture and vegetation gradients. Overall birds tend to avoid the driest vegetation classes, i.e. the highest grounds. Thus, vegetation maps based on remote sensing could be valuable tools to study habitat selection and niche partition in grassland bird communities. ABSTRACT Previous studies have found that keeping the room dark at night was associated with a decrease in manic symptoms for patients with bipolar disorder (BD). However, the association between light at night of real-life conditions and manic symptoms is unclear. We investigated the association between bedroom light exposure at night and manic symptoms in BD patients. One-hundred and eighty-four outpatients with BD participated in this cross-sectional study. The average light intensity at night during sleep was evaluated using a portable photometer for seven consecutive nights. Manic symptoms were assessed using the Young Mania Rating Scale (YMRS), and scores ≥5 were treated as a “hypomanic state.” The median (interquartile range) YMRS score was 2.0 (0–5.0), and 52 (28.2%) participants were in a hypomanic state. The prevalence of a hypomanic state was significantly higher in the participants with an average light intensity at night exposure of ≥3 lux than in those with <3 lux (36.7% versus 21.9%; P = .02). In multivariable logistic regression analysis adjusted for BD type, depressive symptoms, sleep duration, and daytime physical activity, the odds ratio (OR) for a hypomanic state was significantly higher for the participants with an average light intensity at night exposure of ≥3 lux than for those with <3 lux (OR: 2.15, 95% confidence interval: 1.09–4.22, P = .02). This association remained significant at the cutoff value of YMRS score ≥6 (OR: 2.51, 95% confidence interval: 1.15–5.46; P = .02). The findings of this study indicate bedroom light exposure at night is significantly associated with manic symptoms in BD patients. Although the results of this cross-sectional investigation do not necessarily imply causality, they may serve to inform beneficial nonpharmacological intervention and personalized treatment of BD patients. 相似文献

The present research project details synthesis of new hybrid methanofullerenes based on acetylene and triazole esters of malonic acid containing 5Z,9Z-dienoic acids and fullerene C60 under Bingel-Hirsch conditions, including study of the cytotoxic activity with respect to Jurkat, K562, U937 and HL60 tumor cell lines. Sea urchins are model non‐chordate deuterostomes, and studying the nervous system of their embryos can aid in the understanding of the universal mechanisms of neurogenesis. However, despite the long history of sea urchin embryology research, the molecular mechanisms of their neurogenesis have not been well investigated, in part because neurons appear relatively late during embryogenesis. In this study, we used the species Temnopleurus reevesii as a new sea urchin model and investigated the detail of its development and neurogenesis during early embryogenesis. We found that the embryos of T. reevesii were tolerant of high temperatures and could be cultured successfully at 15–30°C during early embryogenesis. At 30°C, the embryos developed rapidly enough that the neurons appeared at just after 24 h. This is faster than the development of other model urchins, such as Hemicentrotus pulcherrimus or Strongylocentrotus purpuratus. In addition, the body of the embryo was highly transparent, allowing the details of the neural network to be easily captured by ordinary epifluorescent and confocal microscopy without any additional treatments. Because of its rapid development and high transparency during embryogenesis, T. reevesii may be a suitable sea urchin model for studying neurogenesis. Moreover, the males and females are easily distinguishable, and the style of early cleavages is intriguingly unusual, suggesting that this sea urchin might be a good candidate for addressing not only neurology but also cell and developmental biology. 相似文献

Abstract: In membranes of rat olfactory bulb, a brain region in which muscarinic agonists increase cyclic AMP formation, the muscarinic stimulation of guanosine 5'- O -(3-[35 S]thiotriphosphate) ([35 S]GTPγS) binding was used as a tool to investigate the receptor interaction with the guanine nucleotide-binding regulatory proteins (G proteins). The stimulation of the radioligand binding by carbachol (CCh) was optimal (threefold increase) in the presence of micromolar concentrations of GDP and 100 m M NaCl. Exposure to N -ethylmaleimide and pertussis toxin markedly inhibited the CCh effect, whereas it increased the relative stimulation of [35 S]GTPγS binding elicited by pituitary adenylate cyclase-activating polypeptide (PACAP). On the other hand, membrane treatment with cholera toxin curtailed the PACAP stimulation of [35 S]GTPγS binding but did not affect the response to CCh. Like CCh, a number of cholinergic agonists stimulated [35 S]GTPγS binding in a concentration-dependent and saturable manner. The antagonist profile of the muscarinic stimulation of [35 S]GTPγS binding was highly correlated with that displayed by the muscarinic stimulation of adenylyl cyclase. These data indicate that the olfactory bulb muscarinic receptors couple to Gi /Go , but not to Gs , and support the possibility that activation of Gi /Go mediates the stimulatory effect on adenylyl cyclase activity. 相似文献

Boundary layer properties of highly dissected leaves: an investigation using an electrochemical fluid tunnel 总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Abstract. A method for modelling heat and mass transfer by diffusion-controlled electrode reactions in a fluid tunnel is described. In this procedure, a nickelplated leaf functions as a test electrode, and the convective transfer of ions to the leaf cathode in an electrolyte-filled flow tunnel is measured as a function of flow rate. The method permits the simulation of water vapour and heat transfer, and in particular, the determination of boundary layer conductances, by analogy with observed ion transfer. The approach is applicable to many problems in modelling heat and mass transfer between leaves and their surroundings, and is especially useful in examining the properties of leaves in which surface characteristics or overall shape are complex. Using this method, the properties of the highly dissected leaves of Achillea lanulosa with regard to forced convection were investigated. The leaves showed high transfer conductances, indicating that the effective unit of heat transfer was probably the individual leaf subelements. Conductances tended to be greater and effective characteristic dimensions smaller for the larger, more open leaves of a lower altitude population in contrast with leaves from high altitude plants. While the results provide insight into the properties of these complex leaf shapes, difficulties in interpreting the findings are discussed, and a number of exploratory approaches are suggested for data analysis and interpretation. 相似文献

The 2-acylamino-5-nitro-1,3-thiazole derivatives (1–14) were prepared using a one step reaction. All compounds were tested in vitro against four neglected protozoan parasites (Giardia intestinalis, Trichomonas vaginalis, Leishmania amazonensis and Trypanosoma cruzi). Acetamide (9), valeroylamide (10), benzamide (12), methylcarbamate (13) and ethyloxamate (14) derivatives were the most active compounds against G. intestinalis and T. vaginalis, showing nanomolar inhibition. Compound 13 (IC50 = 10 nM), was 536-times more active than metronidazole, and 121-fold more effective than nitazoxanide against G. intestinalis. Compound 14 was 29-times more active than metronidazole and 6.5-fold more potent than nitazoxanide against T. vaginalis. Ureic derivatives 2, 3 and 5 showed moderate activity against L. amazonensis. None of them were active against T. cruzi. Ligand efficiency indexes analysis revealed higher intrinsic quality of the most active 2-acylamino derivatives than nitazoxanide and metronidazole. In silico toxicity profile was also computed for the most active compounds. A very low in vitro mammalian cytotoxicity was obtained for 13 and 14, showing selectivity indexes (SI) of 246,300 and 141,500, respectively.
